The second, the original Torchlight, crashed the first time I opened it, but afterward ran (albeit not entirely smoothly) at 1080p with the settings on High (though it should be noted that resizing the VirtualBox window was enough to make the game crash again). The first, Audiosurf, is a Direct3D 9 game released in 2008 which runs well enough even on older netbooks, but the entire VM crashed as it was opening.

After installing Steam in my VM, I downloaded three older games to see if I could get them to run. Things are slightly better in Windows 7, where enabling 3D (and Aero) creates some cursor flickering and screen tearing but fewer crashes. Even basic apps like Solitaire look like flipbooks without 3D acceleration-if you're sticking to basic applications like Mail or Internet Explorer (or desktop apps like Microsoft Office) you'll be fine without it, but 3D-accelerated games and apps will cause problems. Without 3D support, however, many Windows Store apps are rendered virtually unusable because of the operating system's increased use of 3D effects and transitions.

Windows 8 works pretty well in VirtualBox without the 3D driver enabled, but turning it on made for problems while trying to resize windows, and out-and-out crashes when trying to switch between windowed and fulls-creen modes. The main problem with this 3D support is that it is labeled as "experimental," and for very good reason: enabling it is a great way to cause crashes.

3D support in VirtualBoxįirst, a primer: VirtualBox includes basic support for both Direct3D 8 and 9 and OpenGL 2.1, and as of version 4.1.0 (released in July of 2011) it also includes a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM)-capable graphics driver that supports the Aero Glass effects in Windows Vista and Windows 7 guests. The main problem with using Windows 8 in VirtualBox, especially when running apps from the Windows Store, lies in the software's 3D performance issues. That doesn't mean there aren't problems-in full-screen mode, attempting to activate the hot corners can sometimes bring up the OS X menu bar or Dock instead, and in windowed mode the corners can be hard to activate before you roll the cursor off the edge of the screen. I have one in the upper left-hand corner of my screen that I use to lock the Mac when I'm getting up for a moment, and it doesn't work when the Windows VM is the currently active window.

When the VM window has focus, either in windowed or full-screen mode, any hot corners you have configured in OS X simply stop working, which prevents conflicts with Windows 8's built-in hot corners. Hot corners continue to be a mixed bag, as they are in Parallels and VMware.

When resizing the VirtualBox windows (and thus changing the VM's resolution) the operating system does make a series of bings and bongs that will quickly make you lunge for the mute button, but otherwise the desktop (and desktop apps) work as they do in Windows 7. Running Windows 8 in VirtualBox isn't actually too much different from running Windows 7 in VirtualBox. Macs with Retina displays are still a small part of the overall Mac population, but early adopters will need to look to the commercial products to get their Retina fix. Most importantly, the guest OS itself is blurry and pixelated, and turning up the scaling from within the guest OS just makes for larger blurry, pixelated text and icons.

Things like OS X's window title bars and buttons are rendered properly at the higher resolution, but VirtualBox-specific graphics and UI elements are still pixelated. Lastly, while the latest versions of VMware and Parallels both offer differing levels of Retina Display support, VirtualBox doesn't.

Enlarge / Parallels Desktop's "coherence" mode doesn't show a taskbar, puts Windows system tray icons in the OS X menu bar, and can launch applications from the Finder without first starting the VM.
